High Survival

Pete Shimoya third, Fayne fourth, Walker fifth, Somers sixth, Dan Shimoya seventh, Komin-sky eighth. I'll bring up the rear.'*

When they were all roped together, the coach showed them how to make sliding anchors by looping their lines around any protrusions in the cliff wall. That way the group would always be attached to the rocks at one or two points.

Finally Johnny started cautiously along the ledge, Nancy right behind him. "It's slippery," he called back. "Be careful, everyone."

Inch by inch they made their way across the narrow, treacherous shelf. Nancy flattened herself against the rock face with her hands spread out. When they were almost across, she glanced over her shoulder down into the crevasse. Her heart jumped into her throat. It was a long way down!

Just then Nancy felt a tug on the rope that attached her to Johnny. "Whoa!" she heard him gasp.

A quick glimpse told Nancy he'd lost his footing. There was a loud clattering as bits of shale bounced into the crevasse. He was teetering, and Nancy had to fight to keep her own balance.

"Johnny—look out!"

In trying to regain his footing, he had swung too far to the left. Nancy's heart pounded as he pitched forward into the crevasse!
